This was the final retail PlayStation 2 model to feature the PCMCIA interface for the HDD.
Sony introduced this major hardware revision as the first clear step toward preparing the console for release outside of Japan.
Unlike the original launch units, the kernel issues were fully resolved in this version.
However, the same limitation with HDD software remained. This time the problem was tied to the built-in DEV9 driver: it was incompatible with the SCPH-10190 PCMCIA card, which prevented proper communication with the SPEED chip inside the network adapter.
