The 750XX series marked the first PlayStation 2 revision to ship without hardware-based backward compatibility. It was produced from Q3 2005 (datecode 5C) through Q3 2006 (datecode 6C).
Sony removed the PS1’s MIPS R3000A CPU, which had previously served as the I/O processor.
In its place, Sony introduced a PowerPC CPU, tasked with emulating the PS1 CPU while also handling the network features of the SPEED chip, which was dropped from the design.
This change allowed Sony to fully eliminate hard drive support.
The removal of the R3000A had side effects on both PS1 and PS2 software compatibility. Sony addressed this with software-level compatibility fixes for affected games.
The 750XX series shared the same optical drive hardware as the later SCPH-700XX units:
Standard assembly: KHM-430AAA (Sony).
Alternate chassis: TDP082W “K/L” (Mitsumi), functionally identical to the Sony version.
Compatible lasers include:
KHM-430 (Sony)
PVR-802W (Mitsumi)
KHS-430 (aftermarket)
TDP-182W (aftermarket, named after its chassis)
Despite the different names, all four are functionally identical.
All 750XX units shipped with BIOS ROM v2.20.
Manufactured from Q3 2005 (5C) to Q3 2006 (6C).
